Choosing the Right Wood for Your Dock

Choosing the right wood for your dock is an important consideration. At Premium Dock & Marine Systems we use only the highest grades of Manitoulin cedar and pressure treated fir/spruce for our projects. While pressure treated wood docks are generally less expensive, many people don’t realize that a cedar dock is only marginally more expensive while providing many key advantages in both the short and long term. Before basing your decision on price alone, we always suggest that you carefully consider the following:

  • Pressure-treated wood dries, shrinks, checks (splits in the middle), cracks and splinters, while cedar will not.
  • Unlike pressure-treated wood, cedar is a 100% natural wood product.
  • Cedar naturally repels water and resists the aging effects of direct sunlight exposure.
  • Cedar is resistant to wood-boring insects and has an expected useful outdoor life of 25 years or more.
  • The cedar we use is farmed from sustainable, managed forests on Manitoulin Island.
  • Comparatively, cedar is a far superior product. In the longer term, investing in a cedar dock more than pays for itself.

Cedar is clearly the best choice for any dock project, but we understand that pressure treated lumber is still the preferred choice for many of our customers. The pressure treated fir and spruce that we use is arsenic-free and of the highest quality. It also meets are necessary requirements for marine use under provincial environmental laws.
